Cocaine Meme – Originality Or Satire?

Cocaine Meme – Originality Or Satire?

Confusion on the term “Cocaine Meme” is common. Often people refer to such a thing as a “shoutoutout”. I prefer to call it a “piece of dialogue”. A “piece of dialogue” can be any type of communication, regardless of its format. If you have ever looked at a conversation in the shower room, the kitchen, at the park, you have likely heard some type of “meme”.

Cocaine use and the cocaine meme have become so intertwined that many people believe the two are one and the same. Meme is basically a generalized term. It is an overall concept or behavior that captures on and spreads, often refining and transforming itself into something else as it travels. When most people speak of cocaine use and the cocaine meme, though, they usually are talking about web-basedmemes. Web-basedmemes are actual web-based images, video shorts or chunks of written text that are transmitted from one user to another via emails, blogs, forums and social networking. Some jokes, others are merely observations.

It is difficult to say whether the internet helped create the cocaine memo or if cocaine use itself spawned the internet Meme. Regardless, those who believe the two are somehow connected to note that the popularity of “meme” (as well as other types of internet messaging such as image and video) has increased dramatically in recent years. Perhaps it was the popularity of MySpace that started off the cocaine wave.

Cocaine Meme

When I think about the internet and cocaine, I recall my time in high school and college. We always had music videos, random drawings and MySpace pages about drugs like cocaine. The high school students had no real influence on the creation of the cocaine / cocaine Meme, but the internet certainly did. Nowhere is this more true than on sites dedicated to internet marketing and advertising.

The most popular of these internet Memes are those that features cartoon versions of cocaine users doing things such as dancing or acting seductively. These are not intended to be representations of reality, but rather clever cartoons that poke fun at the way people behave while high. They are funny, interesting and many people enjoy them. Unfortunately, a similar type of cocaine/drugs like cocaine/pot are also beginning to show up all over the internet. The internet is flooded with sites about natural supplements, cures and potions.

It would appear that while the cocaine users of the past were primarily drawn by the craze itself, today’s Meme makers are focusing on the addictions and dangers of the recreational use of cocaine. Because of this trend, we see a variety of cocaine Memes popping up all across the internet. These may be referred to as “hype” or “satire”, but they are spreading like wildfire. Hopefully the original cocaine users will catch on to the trend before it gets out of hand.
