Although he has never been known for his extensive recording career, Anthony Ortega honed a unique and personal vocal-like sound during his early years. The California-based musician shared prominent tutor Lloyd Reese with the legendary Eric Dolphy. In his late thirties, Ortega produced his own LPs, including a trio with acoustic bassist Chuck Domanico. In addition, he played in a duet with pianist Michael Brecker in a Grammy-winning LP. A modern ensemble that features Ortega and a saxophonist Kash Killion, Ortega is an intriguing foil for the saxophonist.
During the 1960s, Ortega and Nancy Ortega began performing together and began their professional music career in El Monte, California. They later moved to Lake Tahoe and Azusa, California. Their lives continued to grow and evolve until they settled in Encinitas, California, in 1975. They recorded their debut album “A Man and His Horns” in 1954 and a live album featuring an all-star ensemble in 1961.
