An Introduction to Crib Bedding Sets

Moms-to-be, as well as their close friends and family, will probably have to go shopping for crib bedding sooner rather than later. A baby bedding set isn’t just a crib accessory: it’s decoration and function wrapped up in one cute, cuddly package. If you’re going to invest some money in a baby bedding set, that might be a good thing too. Before you head to the store, make sure you know how to buy crib bedding for your baby, as it will be an important “workstation,” “dwelling,” and “bedroom” in her nursery.

It’s obvious why baby bedding sets are so popular. They are convenient and also offer ready decor for parents who want to have a stylish nursery. However, buying them wisely is what really matters.

The first thing to know when shopping for a baby bedding set is whether or not it will fit your crib. Manufacturers generally call bedding made for standard-size cribs ‘crib bedding’, while other baby bedding is named for the type of bedding it is made for, such as ‘Stokke’, ‘cradle’, ‘baby bunk’, ‘bassinet’, ‘portacrib’, etc. However, there are always exceptions to the rule, so it’s best to measure and ask before buying.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will also have to design your nursery. Getting a baby bedding set that clashes with the rest of the nursery design or color scheme is not going to be a good idea. If possible, have a plan in mind about the design of your nursery before you buy your bedding set. The easiest thing to do is to get the crib bedding set first and use its pattern for color and design inspiration.

Most bedding sets will include a comforter, fitted sheet, bumper, and crib skirt, also known as a dust ruffle. More elaborate bedding sets may include a few extra pieces such as a diaper stacker, valance, or crib accent pillow. To dress the entire nursery in style and class, most stores also offer matching accessories: musical mobiles, laundry baskets, nursery lamps, wall art, clocks, toy bags, etc.

If you want to go for a gender-specific design, then your search for boy or girl crib bedding is more specific, but hardly any easier, as there are hundreds if not thousands of designs on the market. If you don’t know the gender of your child and would like to leave it as a birth surprise, then gender neutral crib bedding is your choice. The ‘unisex’ trend is more popular than ever, which is reflected in the wide variety of gender-neutral designs. They are of the same quality and beauty as gender-specific designs, and sometimes even more creative and whimsical.

Cost is also a consideration – crib bedding generally increases in quality with price. Designer bedding sets are more expensive, but are on trend of the moment, more artistic with exciting new color combinations, meet today’s safety standards, are more durable and of higher quality. Buying crib bedding is an investment and spending a little more is often worth it.

Happy shopping!
