Appearances Matter in Nonverbal Interview Communications

We have always heard it said that “appearance does not matter” or “what counts is what is inside”. Well, while this may be true, when entering an interview setting, the first rule of thumb is that appearance matters.

Research shows that the vast majority of communication that takes place between individuals, especially those who meet for the first time, takes place through non-verbal signals. Non-verbal communication is very broad in nature and ranges from appearance, attitude, the way one behaves, smiling, body language, eye contact, breathing patterns, laughter, voice patterns and speaks. The list is one, but we will focus on those relevant to participate in a stellar interview.

When meeting someone who can become your potential boss, hiring manager, or influential assistant, a positive and appropriate first impression is vital. Basic assumptions like good hygiene should be a clean shave, clean clothes, clean body.

However, the style of clothing, hairstyle, outerwear, shoes, including umbrellas, bags, briefcases, and purses should be appropriate for the position for which you are interviewing. Nothing will affect your chances more than walking into an interview wearing sandals, a wrinkled shirt, an old stain on your tie, or a handbag with glitter on the side. You want to make the right impression that you are serious about the interview, you want the job, and you are the ideal candidate for the company.

Researching the dress code of a company you are interviewing with is a great way to find the right clothing for the job. Dress codes vary so this is definitely something to check. Sleek style is fine, even sought after in some industries, but keep it conservative for the interview. You should not wear anything that is too short, too tight, or too elegant; It could intimidate you or present you as more or less qualified. After you get the job, you can decide how far to expand the closet.

Aside from your clothing, other areas to keep under control during interview preparation include items to carry like a purse, purse, and even an umbrella. Make sure your entire outfit is in line with the professional image you are trying to convey. Come to the interview prepared with a notepad, quality pen, extra copies of your resume, and all other relevant documentation. Prepare to portray the professional that you are and the one who is confident, prepared and capable of getting the job done.

Other non-verbal communication skills from interviewing to sharpen include; Presenting a firm handshake, making and maintaining eye contact, walking confidently, and displaying a pleasant demeanor are all ways to benefit your first impression. Strive to find something that “connects” you and the employer. Look around the office, do you like deep sea diving, chess or golf like you? Say it! This will help break the ice and bring emotional connections to the picture, and it will help to be remembered.

Like everything in life, you have to work for anything worth having. If this job is worth having, go for it! Make It Happen – You know you’re the right fit for the job, all you have to do is convince the employer. The right look and preparation is the key!
