When you get a new puppy, there is a chance that he is not house trained yet. This is especially true for dogs that have just been taken from the litter. If you don’t do this correctly, you can get a lot of stains on your carpet, as well as damaged clothing, furniture, and other fabrics. There are two basic guidelines to remember when training your pet to use puppy pads when using the bathroom inside your home. The first is that you cannot punish a dog after it has had an accident. The second rule has to do with praise. He should get into the habit of making a big fuss every time his pup uses the potty pads. Pet him, shower him with “good boy!” related words, and even offer a gift from time to time. Your pup will associate the praise with his good behavior and will continue to do what you would like him to do.
To homeschool your puppy with pee pads, place a pad in each room of the house that the dog will be in frequently. This will help him get used to the smell of the pads. A chemical is used on them that will attract the dog to relieve himself on them. If you plan on fully housebreaking the dog and having him potty outside, you’ll definitely need to place one next to the door he’ll use to get out of the house.
Give your puppy close attention when he is out of his crate and free to roam the house. Dogs will need to use the bathroom frequently when they are young. They can usually hold their bladder for one hour for every month of their age. Most puppies you can buy or adopt are at least 8 weeks old, so they will need to eliminate every 2 hours.
You will notice the actions the puppies do as they search for a place to go potty. They will be walking around and sniffing, like they are looking for something. When this happens, immediately pick your pup up and place him on a pad. Dog potty pads should be removed from all areas of the house except near the door as your pup gets the hang of the idea.
Move the pad near the door closer to it several times a day until it is right in front of the door. When your pup has learned to use the pad, remove it and let him out to the bathroom. This can take some getting used to, but it is the most effective way to train at home with pee pads.
