Increase your RV kitchen space with a countertop extension

To some, a kitchen in an RV is considered a mere convenience. We’re camping, right? But for others, like full-timers, it becomes an important functional requirement. And having all the counter space you can get is high on the list of must-have features. Until recent years, RV manufacturers didn’t seem to understand this simple concept. Now for some reason they seem to be offering folding counter extensions as an option. But you can create your own and put it where you really need it, not where someone else thinks it should go.

There are basically two options for adding a countertop extension: buy a ready-to-use kit, or buy the support pieces and make the countertop yourself. The kit is pretty basic and should cover most needs. It usually consists of a stamped piece of oak, a piano hinge, and two drop-leaf table supports. These are designed to mount to the countertop overhang using the piano hinge and some even come pre-assembled for easy installation. Just pick a convenient spot and plug it in using the provided hardware.

If you need an extension larger than the 12″ square provided in the kit, then you will need to build one. If you’re handy with basic woodworking tools, making the extension should be easy. But keep in mind that since the extension can come into contact with food, you’ll need to seal it to prevent the wood from decaying and harboring bacteria. And be sure to use an appropriate sealer as well.

Also consider the weight that the extension will support. If the extension is longer than 12″, then you should consider using a flip leg mount instead of a flip leaf mount. Some flip-top legs are even adjustable and have a ball and detent for height adjustment. These make for a more universal application, but you can still build your own perfect length.

Tip: If you have a wall-mounted folding tray in your bedroom (intended for a lightweight TV) that you keep banging your head against, chances are you can use it for a countertop extension. You can have the exact same hinges and hardware as the store-bought kits.

Tip: To increase your counter space even more, you can buy or make a butcher cutting board that goes over the top of your stove burner grate. If you don’t use your burners often, this can give you some much-needed counter space.
