LOTRO Multi-Boxing – Is it for you?

Have you ever been frustrated in LOTRO waiting to find a group to run an instance? Maybe you wanted to level up faster or grind feats faster. Maybe you’re just busy and want to optimize your gaming time. Whatever the reason for your frustration, multi-boxing in The Lord of the Rings Online can make your gaming experience more enjoyable, challenging and exciting.

Personally, the reason I got into multi boxing in LOTRO was a combination of the reasons above. I was extremely busy with work and balancing my personal life with friends and a girlfriend. I just didn’t have much time to play my favorite MMORPG. I was constantly frustrated when I finally had time to play and couldn’t participate in instance races, complete fellowship quests, and work on some of the more difficult tasks. It was infuriating having to waste what little game time I did have looking for other players.

One day, while playing LOTRO, I came across a strange-looking scene in the middle of Bree-land. I saw a group of two players, a dwarf champion and a dwarf minstrel. The minstrel seemed to be simply following the dwarf champion as he cast heals when needed. It was obvious that there were not two players playing. I had a feeling that one player somehow controlled both characters. I sent a message to the champion asking if both characters were his. He kindly replied, explaining the concept of dual boxing. He had two accounts, two computers, and he put the minstrel on follow. He was able to take on almost all the mobs by himself without too much trouble.

I was intrigued by the concept for several reasons. First, I knew it would be wonderful to be able to take on any content or monsters on my own without having to bother with a party. Since my play times were during off hours when not many people were playing, this was very attractive. Second, it seemed like it would be an interesting challenge. Controlling two players at once would force me to really understand and get into the game on a whole different level.

In the last two years, my dual boxing has turned into multi boxing with six computers and six accounts. I have been able to successfully complete any feat, quest, and just about any instance in the game. I still play with my kindred, but even grouping with others is better because you can always find a group! I can tell you that if you’re pressed for time or can’t get enough people to complete a raid, being able to box multiples is extremely helpful.

If you are bored of playing LOTRO or any other MMORPG, if you are sick and tired of waiting for groups to form, if you are too busy working to have much game time, or if you just want to add another level of fun and challenge to the game , I strongly suggest you consider multi boxing. It’s probably the only reason I’ve stayed active and enjoyed the game as much as I have in the last couple of years.
