The most popular parrot species chosen as pets
As with most animals, different types of parrots have certain characteristics, but in general, the most popular parrot species in the larger types that are used as pets are chosen because of their speaking abilities.
Parrots make wonderful house pets and if you want a pet that will entertain you, then a parrot is the answer. They have so many fun features and if they are not happy with something they will let you know soon! Parrots are very vocal when it comes to their own needs and comfort. Get several hungry parrots to feed on a bowl of food and you’ll soon know what I mean.
The four most popular largest pet parrot species.
1. african gray – With beautiful shades of gray in its feathers, this is a parrot that grows to about 14 inches. This parrot also has maroon or bright red tail feathers and a hint of the same color on the crook of the wing.
2. Amazon parrot – These parrots come in various colors and are a very loyal parrot. Very popular with them in the world of parrot owners is the yellow-headed amazon parrot.
3. cockatoos These are one gorgeous looking bird, one bird with attitude! But how fun they are. They are very interactive with their owners, but if they get upset they can be really destructive.
4. macaws – What a dazzling species and such colors! They are so bright and beautiful. Studying macaws, you are amazed at how something can be created with such beauty and detail.
All of these parrots have excellent speaking abilities (although unfortunately some are non-verbal) and will pick up tricks quite easily to entertain. They are active parrots and need to have toys around them so they can occupy themselves when no one is around.
It’s no mystery that the parakeet owner would say it’s one of the most popular species, and in smaller parrots it probably is, the four mentioned above being the top four contenders overall.
A characteristic of the parrot as a pet is that they groom themselves quite well. They will preen their feathers daily, keeping them shiny, clean, and lying down. All they require from the owner in terms of grooming is a spray of water every day or two and the occasional clipping of the nails. There’s not a lot of time involved there, is there?
But, that’s the advantage. The downside is that they will need to spend more time in your apartment. Most like their cages, but they are not proud of that house. Parrots calmly chew things and throw them away (well, sometimes) and wait for the owner to clean up their mess. I didn’t say they had attitude!
Have you ever seen a parrot eat from a seed tray? Once their favorite seeds have been shelled, they’ll sweep their broad beak across the tray and scatter seeds far and wide in hopes of finding more of their favorite morsel underneath. The mess they can make in just a few minutes will have you shaking your head.
A very good way to see more about the different types of parrots is to visit a parrot forum where parrot owners discuss the different types of parrots and this will give you an idea of which parrot you might like, and let me tell you, some of the stories are hilarious. Parrots definitely take their place in the hierarchy of the family unit.
