Why do you work? Most people answer that they need the money to live and buy the things they want to have. Some (mostly wealthy people) might give a different answer: “I like a challenge; my job is interesting; I think I make a difference in the world; I just want to get out of the house.” The Navy announces that their jobs are an adventure. What are you saying?
Do you work to live, live to work, or is your job something that just fell into your lap? Perhaps a deeper question will help you take a position. Do you have a plan with a desired outcome or do you work to support someone else’s outcome? Most people will answer that they are vaguely aware that they are working for someone else’s plan and result and, as long as they are paid, they don’t care if the result is achieved. Employers worry about such unfair employees.
When you get married, and especially when you have a family with children, or a responsibility with an elderly person or someone with a disease, it seems a simple thing, that you must bring the money to keep the family housed, fed, protected. , healed and happy. If your circumstances force you to bring in as much money as you can, does that mean you’re willing to sacrifice your ethics, your morals, and even break a law to get more money? Some say “yes”, but many of those people refuse to see their guilt. “I had to, man! I had too!”

He cares about each one of us and gives us what we need, not necessarily what we want. He wants us to recognize him as God. He expects us to seek him out and want to be part of his Kingdom after we die. Jesus finished his prayer in verse 33, “and all these things will also be given to you.” Those things are what you need, the very things you say justify why you work. We must work to draw close to and honor God by doing what we are told in the Bible. LaterWe can expect God to do the things we need for us.
This does not mean stopping working to wait for God to provide. It means working harder to be a Christian so that others at work will see us fulfilled, happy, and comfortable with our lives. You become an example to others of what is pleasing to God, the opposite of who betrays a coworker to get more for himself.
